Pairs Made in Heaven

A pair noun is a noun that is made of two identical parts. Examples:


Pants Scissors Binoculars Glasses Sneakers Underpants Shorts Earphones Goggles


Are they singular or plural?

Pair nouns are plural nouns, so we should use plural verb forms and determiners with them.


Correct

My glasses are broken. They need fixing.

Your sneakers are so cool!

These binoculars cost $7000! That’s way too much.


Incorrect

My headphones is not working.

This shorts is too small for me!

Safety goggles is necessary in the laboratory.
